Festivals in Greece

Anthesteria:

Anthesteria is one of the popular Greek festivals and was celebrated annually for 3 days during the Anthesterion month (January/February full moon) in the honor of Dionysus, an ancient Greek God of wine. The 3 days of the festival are called as Pithoigia – where wine jars are opened, Choes – on which the new wine is blessed and there will be drink-off matches, and Chytroi – it is a festival of the dead where food is cooked in the pots and is left for the wandering souls.

The Greater Dionysia:

The Greater Dionysia is the second most important festival and also a large festival that was celebrated in the honor of the god Dionysus in the ancient Athens. This festival featured dramatic competitions and is comprised of Rural Dionysia and the City Dionysia. These competitions were held in the sort of comedies, tragedies and dithyrambs. Several plays were performed in the Dionysian theatre which is one of the earliest theaters in the world and during the celebrations; prisoners were freed in order to participate.

Rural or lesser Dionysia:

Held during the month of Poseidon (winter), the Rural Dionysia is an ancient rural festival. The festival consists of a central event “the pompe” which is a procession and then followed by contests like singing, dancing and choruses.

Lenaea:

Celebrated in the honor of Dionysus Lenaius, Lenaea is an annual festival that is held in the in the beginning of winter. It is one of the lesser festivals of Athens with a dramatic competition, held in a theatre outside the city. At this festival comedy was more significant than the tragedy and 5 comedies were usually performed.
